Designing Curriculum with ‘Big Ideas’

Target audience: teachers working with curriculum development and design.

Curriculum developed from ‘big ideas’ instead of knowledge objectives can transcend subject boundaries, and promote skills of inquiry and objectivity that help learners become informed citizens.  Focussing on real life contexts, lesson planning with big ideas helps teachers to develop cognitive frameworks and approaches to learning that helps their students to take meaningful action. This workshop will use examples from science investigation and inquiry teaching in other subjects to show how curriculum infused with big ideas can provide tools for life-long learning. Since most students will never become subject-specialists, it will ask all teachers to question what they teach and why they teach it.
